Weather It Is (One Storm There, One Here?)

Good Morning:

The weather on the east coast is really going to be "frightful."  The high resolution forecast model is predicting up to 50 cm of snow from NYC westward, while the weather service is predicting 30 cm or snow in the city itself.  What does this have to do with us over here?

Well, for a while our weather has been pretty much stuck, or rather the circulation pattern over Europe has been stuck with a very deep trough over central Europe. The effects of the very strong strong upstream (upwind of us) over the US will ripple in our direction, eventually helping to push this trough eastward.  However, there is no indication that the trough will maintain its integrity (i.e, continue to be a deep and cold trough), but some of the energy associated with it will move our way mid-next week.  This will be followed by clearing weather and then the potential for rain at the end of next week (or early the next).

Is winter over, as one of my daughters asked me this morning?  You've all heard the phrase "It ain't over til its over," or "we've still got an out to go," or "never give up (hope)."  Winter still has time to make a really cold come back.  In the meantime, enjoy the nice weather!
